Special Educational Needs

Mendip Green is an inclusive school. It is a single storey building which is accessible by the main entrance or through the individual classrooms. There is a disabled toilet and shower for use by disabled children and a hoist. Mendip Green has a Hearing and Language Resource Base run by a qualified Teacher of the Deaf and a Nurture Group and Pure Nurture Group run by a specialist Learning Support Assistant.

Our Special Needs Co-ordinator is Miss Kelly Baker.  She works alongside Mrs Ashleigh Melhuish, who is our Inclusion Team Lead. Both ladies are assisted by Mrs Jayne Marsh (Assistant SENDCo).

If you have concerns about your child's progress at school around any of the following; reading, writing, numbers, social and emotional development, behaviour, communicating, physical or sensory, the first person to speak to about your concerns is your child’s class teacher.

If you still have on-going concerns you may wish to speak to the school’s Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENDCo) Kelly Baker who is contactable via the school office.

If any special educational needs are identified the SENCO will plan how to help your child with the involvement of both yourself and the class teacher. Your child’s help and progress may be recorded through an Individual Education Plan (IEP) or another way of recording their progress.

Parents are offered the opportunity to meet with their child’s class teacher, support staff and Miss Baker to review their child’s Individual Education Plan and write the new one at the IEP Clinics. This is a twenty minute consultation held three times a year.

Lorraine Young and Sarah Handcock, Pupil & Family Support Workers, are also available to meet with parents to discuss any social and emotional issues which they feel may be affecting their child’s ability to learn. They can work with small groups and/or with individual children depending on the child’s specific needs. Appointments can be arranged via the school office.

If you still have concerns that your child's needs are not being met, please do talk with the headteacher, Mr James Oakley.
